- Leave social hesitations behind! Start self-examination at the age of 20: Dr. Joshi
(Report/Neeraj Pal)
Dehradun! Breast cancer cases are steadily increasing across the country, yet a large number of women still delay reaching the hospital. This is primarily due to social hesitation and lack of information. If the disease is detected in its early stages, treatment is largely successful and the patient can live a normal life.
Dr. Shashank Joshi, a cancer specialist at Government Doon Medical College, said that women over 40 should get a mammography done once a year. However, if a woman has a family history of breast cancer or genetic predisposition, they are advised to get screened even under the age of 40.
According to Dr. Joshi, the major factors that increase the risk of breast cancer include age, family history, genetic mutations (such as BRCA1 and BRCA2), obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, a sedentary lifestyle, and hormone replacement therapy.
He said that 10 to 15 percent of cases are hereditary, so those with a family history of the disease should take special precautions.
Lifestyle changes can provide protection: Joshi
Dr. Joshi said that habits like a balanced diet, regular exercise, and breastfeeding can reduce the risk of this disease. He explained that breastfeeding reduces estrogen levels in the body, which is considered a major cause of breast cancer.
Mental stress is common among cancer patients. Dr. Joshi says, “The mere mention of cancer can cause panic among patients and their families. Depression and fear can sometimes develop during treatment. In such situations, the support of both family and society is crucial.
Early Signs of Cancer Through Breast Self-Examination
Dr. Joshi stated that every woman should begin breast self-examinations starting at age 20. It’s best to do this a week after menstruation. He advised that women should stand in front of a mirror and observe any changes in breast shape, skin, or nipples. Examine the entire breast with gentle pressure, and if you notice any lumps, swelling, redness, pain, or discharge, consult a doctor immediately.
He added that if breast cancer is detected in its early stages, 95 to 98 percent of patients can be completely cured. This disease is one of the most common cancers in women, so it’s crucial to be aware of its symptoms and consult a doctor promptly.
According to experts, there are simple ways to detect breast cancer early. Women can perform breast self-examinations at home, which can detect any abnormalities in their early stages. Furthermore, mammography is a common and readily available test that can help confirm cancer. However, this test should only be performed under the guidance of a doctor.
Dr. Joshi stated that regular checkups, awareness, and timely treatment can significantly reduce the risk of this disease. He urged women to be vigilant about their health and never feel embarrassed or afraid to undergo testing. Menstruating women should check themselves seven days after their periods, while postmenopausal women should make screening a routine on a specific date each month.
